A Tale of Mental Illness from the Inside - Humanizing Mental Illness
Via stories from her own battle with schizophrenia, USC Law professor and award-winning author Elyn Saks allows viewers to both imagine a day in the life of an individual with a severe mental illness and question all of the incorrect assumptions they’ve ever made about such individuals. Saks’ honesty demands admiration and respect, which she dares viewers to feel for all individuals living with a mental illness. She also challenges broader society to work more diligently towards finding better treatment for mental illnesses before she identifies a prison as the largest provider of mental health care in Los Angeles. Her resounding message is, “The humanity we all share is more important than the mental illness we may not. What those of us who suffer with mental illness want is what everybody wants; to work and to love.”
